Idol News: David Cook's Sophomore Album Debuts at #7

The numbers are in: David Cook moves 46K copies on its first week and debuts at #7 on The Billboard 200! Yes, disappointing numbers considering his self titled debut album sold more than 280K on its first week, but HUGE drop off for American Idol sales from album to album isn't exactly a new thing. I mean, ask David Archuleta and Jordin Sparks.

According to Billboard:
.. his new album is off to a slow start compared to his 2008 self-titled debut. That album - which entered at No. 3 with 280,000 - came six months after Cook won "American Idol," so a big bow wasn't terribly surprising. However, his new album has yet to find a hit single and he doesn't have the glow of "Idol" to aid him. The new album's lead track, "The Last Goodbye," has so far only dented one of our airplay charts - Adult Pop Songs (No. 29 this week).
I wonder how much of this is because it took him three years to release a new record? It must be such a strange business to be in. On the one hand it’s art, you can’t rush a record and it’s so personal, but on the other hand it’s business and if you wait too long there are fewer people willing to wait for you.

To me, watching the numbers for a couple of American Idol alums the past year has been kind of depressing. True, I didn’t expect David to sell over 100K, but I thought he would be around the 50K mark for his first week. Hopefully, RCA is discussing the next single.

On another news, Scotty McCreery's EP exclusively available on Walmart moves 40K, which lands him at #10. Lauren Alaina at #24 with 20K, James Durbin at #31 with 15K, and Haley Reinhart at #37 with 14K. Not too shabby considering that they're ONLY available on Walmart.

Haley under the three of them!!! that's fucked up!
she was #2 on Walmart's album charts right after Scotty all along!
don't tell me James or Lauren got more fans...

The fact that David Archuleta's second pop album was released with zilch in terms of promotion, radio push, or any meaningful exposure coupled with key music execs leaving the label (Jive) and David without management spelled disaster. At least Sony Asia didn't abandon him, and that's one key reason why he continues to do well in Southeast Asia.

I don't follow David Cook's career very closely, but I do know that he had one or two appearances on Idol this past season and recorded the "boot" song for departing contestants. That kind of exposure has no doubt helped album sales. Radio in the U.S. has also been friendlier to Cook, even when his singles sales haven't matched Archuleta's.

It seems the only artists really doing well are those with organized promotional machines behind them and those who seek publicity with outrageous antics and/or bad behavior. No wonder the music industry is in such bad shape.

Katheryn: That maybe true. But all I'm stating is the general fact regardless if they got a good promotion for the album or not. Fact is, everyone had disappointing numbers for their second album. That's it.

Dam: I didn't misunderstand you. I was just pointing out that in David Archuleta's case low album sales could be attributed at least in part to the fact that very few outside his online fan community even knew he released another CD. Right after he left his label and there was false reporting that he had been dropped, I cannot tell you how many times I read where people were shocked to learn he had another album out. To me that speaks volumes about the lack of consideration he got from Jive.

I think a big reason Idol sales fall after the initial release is because the Idol machine is busy showcasing the next batch of contestants. Very few alums receive substantial benefit from Idol once the next season begins and, in fact, all have the Idol stigma to try and overcome.

Katheryn: I agree. I think the Idol stigma is the biggest hurdle for any alum. The contestants who broke out of it are actually the successful ones.

David Cook is my second favorite Idol, so I was excited when buying this album.

I was actually really disappointed with it.

It just wasn't the David Cook I expected.
