American Idol 14: Top 8 Girls

Pretty strange show. This was the episode where I saw two or three people capable of standing in the Kodak Theatre at the Finale, but there was also too much crazy going on throughout the night. These girls need to calm down! Haha.

Also, what was Harry's obsession with intonation? Yes, the vocals weren't perfect for most of these girls, but to say they were out of tune - maybe except for one - was ridiculous. He wasn't as tough yesterday with the guys, so I don't understand the sudden obsession with it.

Anyway, let's do this!

08. Alexis Gomez
I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)
So, I’m going to try and say this in a really simple way. Ahem, here it goes.. *clears throat* THIS WAS #$%@ING AWFUL!! Whew. Well, I hope that was clear. 2

07. Maddie Walker
I'll Be There
My head practically smacked my desk when I heard this song choice. Maddie's voice was definitely on point, but it's a very phoned in performance. It was like there wasn't any thought involved. Very robotic; very early Carrie Underwood. Maddie simply is a boring artist with a strong voice. If she continues down this path she will be sent packing very, very soon. Like, maybe next week. 5

06. Loren Lott
I Wanna Be Where You Are
She's certainly an acquired taste, but I thought Loren delivered a relatively strong performance of a surprisingly inspired song choice. It was peppy, feisty, and she really knows who she wants to be as a performer and she's having a blast showing that to America. Good for her. 6

05. Joey Cook
Shop Around
Joey sang a sort of jazz version of Shop Around and it was goofy and weird. Don't get me wrong, I love her when she's weird and she's an interesting singer, but the affectations in her voice was front and center and it made for a pretty polarizing performance. Her voice is incredibly discernible though, which will be a huge asset in this competition. 7

04. Jax
Ain't No Mountain High Enough
She came out with a reinvented arrangement to a very popular song and while I thoroughly enjoyed parts of it - and her voice was solid enough for the challenge - turning the song into something jazzy was a terrible idea. Ain't No Mountain High Enough is a bright, uplifting, dance track that celebrates light and energy, and as much I love to see people take songs and do something new with them, the lyrics and soul did not support what Jax did to the melody. She needs to be careful as she wasn't particularly being too clever about it. 7

03. Adanna Duru
Hello
Adanna's version of Hello was a rather solid vocal performance - contrary to Harry's assertion of her intonation. I thought the vocals were pretty dead on tonight, and it seemed to me that the intensity and drama never dropped throughout the performance. She's still a bit forgettable, but the fact that she made it farther than Lovey James is a pretty good indication that she has people. 7.5

02. Tyanna Jones
Rockin' Robin
Rockin' Robin was a huge risk - remember Megan Joy in Season 8? - but Tyanna has the type of voice that will allow her to sing absolutely anything. Her performance was perfectly executed, she has some amazing charisma, very likable and accessible, and she proved with this performance that she's, vocally, one of the most talented girls this season. She just needs a little polish and she's good to go. 7.5

01. Sarina-Joi Crowe
You Really Got A Hold On Me
Again, what was up with Harry and intonations? Sarina-Joi had no problems with her intonation as her pitch were, for the most part, spot on. There's not much more I can say about Sarina-Joi Crowe. She's clearly the best vocalist this season and she doesn't show any signs of faltering or slowing down. If anything, she's actually getting better as the weeks go on and that's a really ominous sign for the rest of the contestants. She has strategy and there's no stopping her. 8
